What is sock yarn?
Sock wool is characterized by a special composition that makes it particularly hard-wearing and durable. High-quality sock wool usually consists of a mixture of:
- Virgin wool : For warmth and breathability
- Polyamide (nylon ): For additional strength and elasticity
A typical mix ratio could be 75% virgin wool and 25% polyamide. This combination makes for soft, warm and durable socks.
The advantages of virgin wool
-
Excellent durability
Thanks to the addition of polyamide, sock wool is particularly resistant to wear and tear. This makes it ideal for everyday and sports socks.
-
Warmth and breathability
The virgin wool in the mix ensures that the socks keep you pleasantly warm and at the same time regulate moisture, creating a pleasant foot climate.
-
Elasticity and shape retention
The elasticity of the sock wool allows for a perfect fit and prevents the socks from becoming loose or losing their shape.
-
Easy-care
Many types of high-quality sock wool are machine washable and felt-free, which makes care much easier.
-
Diverse designs
Sock yarn is available in a wide range of colors and patterns, from classic solid colors to exciting gradients and patterns.
Besides making socks, there are many other creative uses for sock yarn! Do you know them all?

Care of sock wool:
-
Wash:
Always check the washing instructions on the sock yarn label. Many modern sock yarns are machine washable and non-felting. If there are no specific instructions, you should use gentle hand washing. Use a special wool detergent that is free of enzymes and bleach. This protects the fibers and maintains the softness and elasticity of the wool.
-
Dry:
Do not tumble dry. Let the socks dry flat on a towel. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources such as radiators, as these can damage the fibers. Hanging drying can distort the shape of the socks. Some yarns
-
Iron:
Set the iron to the lowest heat setting, often marked "wool" or with a low heat symbol. High temperatures can burn or mat the wool.
